Thoughts from a Dyslexic

Dyslexia is classed as a disability. When I first heard about this 18 months ago, it left me with a feeling of disbelief.

How could I be disabled? My perception of a disabled person was someone in a wheelchair, or someone with visual or hearing problems. Don’t get me wrong, I’d known from being a child that I was dyslexic, and I also recognised how that made me feel, particularly at school……..but disabled………NEVER!

When I got over the shock, I began to realise that to be disabled put me at an advantage….not a disadvantage, because I am now protected by law. I am now right to expect companies and organisations to present information to me in a format I can understand.

About time too!

Did you know?
The Disability Discrimination Act aims to stop discrimination against people at work and when disabled people apply for jobs.
