Access to the School Curriculum
Guidance
from the DfES indicates that the term “curriculum” covers not only teaching
and learning but also the wider curriculum of the school such as participation
in after school clubs, leisure, sporting and cultural activities or school
visits. The guidance goes on to suggest that curriculum access should
be seen at a “whole school” level, the rationales being that many barriers
to access the curriculum will be similar for many groups of pupils and
therefore a strategic approach should be adopted to removing those barriers.
As an important element of its strategy in
increasing the accessibility of the curriculum to disabled pupils, the
LEAs should secure appropriate training for teaching and non-teaching
staff and encourage schools to share good practices. The LEAs should
also ensure that all schools are aware of support services which can provide
advice to teachers on teaching techniques and strategies, classroom management,
and curriculum material. Support services should provide support for
curriculum development, direct teaching or practical support for class
teachers, specialist help or access to teaching assistance.
